Tik Tok yeah DO stop .....

It was as a fucking stunt.

How, though? Just going offline in general? They always said they would.

On the government end, all three branches said screw you TiKTok so not sure how that falls.

Overall, though, I think this whole thing is dicey. It was bullshit how fast and simple it went bipartisianly through the whole freaking government. And now it is sketchy that Trump seems to have his paws all over it and TikTok is like, yay Trump! What are the stipulations? How much is the government going to be involved?

I do have a feeling both Trump and Biden saw a piece of intelligence that is horrifying on how the data is being used. Only explanation for how both agreed so quickly on an issue.

It was never shutting down for real at this point. It was a stunt to create a villain (despite Biden saying the ban wouldn't be enforced) and a savior (the criminal in chief).

Pure manipulation against a "leader" who is easily manipulated and greedy. He'll end up getting his cut when a deal is made.

And it's another indication there won't law that can't be ignored and there won't be any consequences.

The law was passed with overwhelming bipartisan support. Should the law have been passed in the first place? I don't know and I don't really care. But it wasn't really about stealing data, weaponization and propaganda. Because then all social media would need to be banned.

That won't (and shouldn't) happen. But the people of this country would be a lot less fucking stupid if it did happen.

Not only was it a stunt, but a transparent stunt. The only mistake was they didn't wait to restore service until noon on Monday.

I don't know. How does that benefit them?

In some ways this actually makes me distrust the service even though I have supported it and hated the U.S.'s handling of this whole thing. It makes me really fearful that the government now has a say in how it runs, which is kills the whole free speech thing even more.

TikTok clearly held its ground by not selling -- I honestly think part of why it passed so easily is Congress thought it would sell quickly and easily. So why is it bowing to Trump? It is weird.

Not to mention all the new users TikTok will get from the "controversy."

TikTok had plenty of users anyway. That's one of the sticking points of why this was a huge deal, was just how staggering of a number of regular U.S. users there wee. It may get a few more but that will be a drop in the bucket.

I still really don't see how making this a stunt benefits them.

Again, they always said they would go dark without a resolution. They obviously got one. How shady it is is another story.
