2025-26 College basketball coaching carousel

Will Wade's biggest crime was being overheard saying what every coach said and saying it 2-3 years ahead of schedule. I cannot believe I am defending him but here we are. I no more care about what he said on that wiretap than I care about someone getting busted with beer right before prohibition was lifted. The world has moved on.

Hate to like this but you're right. Wade just said the soft part out loud. We reward people like that now, but at least his focus is trained on a proper subject worth taking down.

Bellarmine head coach Scott Davenport will retire. His son Doug is expected to take over as part of an agreement that was in place for the last couple years.

Has this ever worked? Not at Georgetown, not at Texas Tech, not at Davidson ... maybe at DePaul with Joey Meyer.

The best thing about Georgetown was Thompson whacked his own son to get Patrick Ewing back.

The Bobby Hurley situation at Arizona State doesn't seem tenable. They're reportedly gonna "allow" him to coach the final year of his contract next season, I guess without an extension. Of their three options -- fire him, extend him or give him a lame-duck season -- they're choosing the one that won't cost them any immediate money. But that program is going nowhere: Ten seasons, three tournament bids (one of them a play-in game loss during a season in which they were ranked as high as No. 3 in the country), one win (the next season, also in the play-in game).

I agree that's probably untenable, but it's the portal era and nobody is recruited for more than a season anyway. He doesn't have to worry nearly as much about losing on the recruiting trail b/c of his uncertain future. Who knows? Lightning might strike.

Oh for sure. But if they don't want to pay his (probably minimal) buyout and don't want to extend him, does it seem as if they're gonna pony up for players? Unless they're telling him: We're using the money we could have used to buy you out or extend you to get a couple of guys in here, coach them up or be gone.

My suspicion for Bobby Hurley is a month from now he will suddenly announce he is following a lifelong passion to coach some A-10 also-ran.

I thought the same thing too after reading thru some of the follow-up Tweets. Positions him nicely to gauge other gigs and eventually spin his exit as his doing.

The NC State opening makes me think - why has LeVelle Moton never taken another job? He's probably gotten other offers, but opted to stay at NC Central since 2009.
He'd probably say no to State for a number of reasons, but he grew up in Raleigh, talks about his upbringing a lot and has helped build parks and developments in east Raleigh.
There are murals of him in town and he has a decently big profile in the HBCU circuit and locally. Would make for a good story if he came back to his hometown and led State back to glory.
But it's just a pipe dream in my head for now.
