Coup attempt in Turkey

Erdogan was drifting into full-on Islamic nutbag territory. Perhaps as in Egypt, the moderates reside in the military. A coup here is not necessarily a bad thing.

Erdogan has accused the Gulenists, followers of an Islamic cleric named Gulen who is currently in exile in the Poconos of all places, as being responsible. But then again, he's not in a position to know right now.

Should it matter at all to us that he's the lawful democratically-elected leader?
 
Turkey holds multi-party elections, but it is far from a free country, no matter if the military or civilians are in power.
 
A friend of mine from high school works for the State Department over there. Trying to find out if he's OK. Never thought a Turkish coup would hit close to home for me.
