GAP Band Fans

Still a clashic article on The Temptations doing Silent Night.

Most people don't know that until the mid-'90s, to get licensed as an R&B group, every fourth song had to feature a deep-voiced member whispering smooth-talking come-hithers to their female fans. It was called the "Race Music Bash Act of 1957." I know this sounds like an inane fact I created out of thin air, but it is no more preposterous than following the introduction to a song about the birth of Jesus with the beginning of a poem about Santa Claus. It makes absolutely no sense except for a congressional decree or a little too much cognac. Either way, it still bangs.

An In-Depth Analysis of the Greatest Christmas Song of All Time

Has there been a band in the last 20 years that came along that was a "clashic" rock band, with a guitar, bash player, drums, maybe a keyboardist? Seems to be a rarity as you have more individual artists and a lot of "producer-driven" work.

Do duos count? The Black Keys and Japandroids have pretty "clashic" sounds to me, although they're guitar-drums heavy, and less keyboard. "How Dare You Want More" by Bleachers sounds retro rock to me, and it's a hell of a jam. Also, if you have Spotify, the algorithm will find plenty for you, it's just that those bands don't really chart anymore. (Also, a surprising amount are Canadian and excellent.)

re: The Gap Band, WEEI would use a sound drop from "You Dropped A Bomb On Me" to get rid of racist or annoying callers, which was always very amusing. That was probably my first exposure to them, as a teenager, and thanks to Napster and Limewire, I've been into them and other "funk" bands for a decent amount of time. It probably helps that George Clinton showed up in "PCU," and Morris Day is a plot element of "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back."

Canuckistani has a few of those high-end rock bands, Arkells, The Trews and others. The Struts are another band that sounded like they walked right out of the British glam scene in 1974.

I had never heard that Bleachers song but holy ship, you're darn right I am going to check out more.

I came across this banger on the Underground Garage:

There's hope for rock and roll yet.

Hey I enjoy rock too but this is a GAP Band thread.

You're right, we must have a "What's in your 8-track these days?" thread around here somewhere.

I just find it remarkable that you don't see many even five or six member bands anymore - and the GAP Band and others had a mentioned here would have small army on stage.

Tedeschi Trucks Band is big, I think they had at least 15 people onstage when I saw them

Once you put together where the GAP Band comes from and the history of the neighborhood, it's hard to listen to "You Dropped a Bomb on Me" the same way.
