Is it time to do away with All-Star games?

I'm OK with the MLB game, and I'm glad they got rid of the home field advantage in the World Series thing, which I thought was just stupid. It's not magical anymore, but it's a nice summer one-night diversion.

NBA and NHL games are mostly harmless fun, although I do feel bad for the goalies.

Pro Bowl is a disaster waiting to happen. If a star player suffers a major injury, it's done.

Not so sure about that. Patriots lost a running back, Robert Edwards, with a bright future to a knee injury during some sort of scrimmage in the sand. IIRC, never played again. Game carried on.

(I agree with you, Baron. But with that injury, the number of incentives in players' contracts for being named to the Pro Bowl and the individual made-for-TV stuff, it's probably not going away.)

The smart move, and maybe this shows that I'm not paying attention, is for the media and fans to have fun with the other activities and make the game sort of a culmination/wrapup. The NHL has tried different formats, and the NBA has tried some stuff. What to do with the Pro Bowl, especially after Roger had to all but threaten the players into trying harder because it had become a complete joke?

In an ideal world, the home team for the World Series should be the team with the best record, no doubt.

In the context of a world where home field was decided by odd year is National League and even is American League, All-Star Game winners getting home field advantage is so much forking better it's unfathomable to me that anyone would argue against it.

The baseball ASG was cool growing up in the '80s.

Same with the NBA when it was simple with the dunk and 3 contest and a no-defense but still entertaining game.

Never really got into the Pro Bowl or NHL ASG but always watched till a certain again.

It's OK if any All-Star Game is no longer "must-see-TV" for every age/demographic the way it was going back to the '60s or even the '90s. If enough people wanna watch, and enough companies wanna cover the costs through sponsorships, why would any league stop?

Edwards was hurt in a flag football game. He tore his ACL, MCL, and PCL. He also severed an artery and there was talk he might have to have the leg amputated.

It surprises me every year that the Pro Bowl is still played.

They should just name the team (so the players get their bonuses and Hall of Fame voters can have their benchmark) and hold an honors show.

I always thought they should just have a golf tournament, with the biggest cash prize for low score by an offensive lineman.

Especially since there's no trip to Hawaii anymore.
