And this is one of my 500+ favorite songs ...

I can't pick a favorite. It depends on my mood and the context and...

During one of those dark nights of the soul, I took the advice of a friend and did a random play, asking God to reveal me to myself and expecting "Simple Gifts" or somesuch chewy bit of philosophy.

Here's what came out of my computer speakers:

I'll take it. Not possible to hear early vintage Van Halen without smiling.

I asked the question, because Simon himself thought Elvis' version was the best, and superior to his performance.

I agree.

A live version:

Elvis did it proud, I gotta admit.

But Artie is still the 10.0.

Depending on my mood, it looks something like this.

Amarillo by Morning, George Strait
My Home's in Alabama, Alabama
Baby Please Don't Go, Muddy
Gimme Shelter, Stones

Not an easy choice.
"Dear Prudence"….one of Lennon's best. It has everything I love in a song, especially the hypnotic droning D chord variations, tasty fills, excellent pace and, of course, great vocals.

I was reminded of another - recent - favorite while listening to Spotify at the grocery store tonight.

Mercy Now, by Mary Gauthier. Our church's pastor is preaching a series about mercy, and I suggested this song to everyone who has a say in worship planning, and it was sung in big church last week by a young woman with an amazing voice. It was definitely the highlight of the service for me.
