Deion on other coaching jobs: 'I don't hear it'

"I tell them what I told them when they came: I'm here," Sanders said. "I tell them my mother's here, my sister's here, my dog is here, my daughter's here, three of my sons are here, my other daughter comes to darn near every home game. We're here.

"I get mail here, I pay taxes here. I don't hear that. Maybe our recruiting staff hears it, but I don't hear it. I'm too honest with parents. I'm going to tell them the truth."

At this point there's more conference interest in Tulane than Boise State.

I'm told.

This always baffles me. Any good coach knows that you have to have HS conections IN STATE even if you're not always going to recruit their kids. You still have to meet with them, visit, MAKE THE EFFORT, show up at the coaching clinics, show up at the HS whatevers, go to the championship games just to be seen, unless you're somewhere else.

Why? Because HS coaches talk with parents, and parents and runners and all of them can open or shut doors quickly. It's mind-boggling. New coach comes in and has to "re-establish" the relationships with whatever HS coaches, or maybe all of them. Even if your time is stretched, and I know coaches' time is triple-stretched, you make time to make contact from the teeny to mighty. It's just good networking, good relationship-building, and common sense.

All true, and add that Texas, Florida, and California are widely seen as the best recruiting spots there are. Why write off a third of them?

I'm here because my QB son can't transfer again without sitting out. After that all bets are off

So many coaches seem eager to depart Oregon for other places, and I can't think of anyone who actually succeeded elsewhere. I understand they hate being under Phil Knight's thumb in Eugene, but Rich Brooks, Kelly, Cristobal, Taggart...I'm guessing Lanning will end up going somewhere closer to where he grew up at some point too. I almost think it isn't so much the bigger money, but that coaches out this way often feel overlooked by the national media.

Cristobal was given a wagon of money by his alma mater. Not quite the same as the others.

I'm not saying they didn't leave for good oppotunities - just that they didn't have success elsewhere. Oregon State is in the same boat. Riley (twice), Erickson, Tommy Prothro did lead UCLA to the Rose Bowl, the year after taking Oregon State. Then on to the NFL.

Kliff Kingsbury has shown nothing that he should be on any list for any job at the Power 5 level. The guy was a head coach for 10 years and has a losing record in six, was .500 in another and 7-6 in one.
He went from being fired in Lubbock, to being on Riley's staff at USC, to being an NFL Head Coach.

True. And Lanning has made the point that he's well aware that other guys who left Oregon found out immediately that the grass isn't always greener. I suspect that was a reference to Taggart and Cristobal far more than the other guys.
