2024-25 College Basketball Thread

I guess UT Rio Grande Valley quietly moved to the Southland Conference in the offseason and no one bothered to tell me. :(

You're right, it's weird. The pet peeve that is.

Mississippi State used to do a clever thing where it had every county in the state listed just beyond the out of bounds line wrapping around the court. Helps to have enough to fill the space I suppose (82 counties).

It would just feel deeply weird if Duke decided to put the state of North Carolina at its midcourt.

Or if Notre Dame, in a state it refuses to admit it is part of ("an hour from Chicago!!!") had the outline of Indiana.

That's one thing and probably a case by case deal for private schools. But if you are a taxpayer-funded joint you have just as much right to it as the "U. of" school. Heck for folks like Kennesaw State, that outline of Georgia is probably necessary branding so folks know where the heck the Mighty Owls are even from.

I labeled it stupid and weird! There's nothing worse on the unpopular opinions reddit than someone who puts out a completely non-wacky take!

My weird take on it is if you use your state shape on the floor then I need faint outlines of where all the other states would be in relation. I want to be able to say "He shot that from Vicksburg/Euclid/Truth or Consequences!"

The Big Ten mostly avoids the state outlines. Indiana has long had their logo inside an outline of the state at ashembly Hall. Illinois has the state outline, I think, or they have. Ohio State too? Nebraska used to, but I think they got rid of it for this season.

Some states' shapes don't lend themselves to it. An elongated state can be problematic to aesthetically fit on a court. It's either too small when shrunk or too long. Tennessee, for example, should never try it.

This was the logo at the Stokley Center forever and a day. I think it may have even carried over to the early years of Thompson-Boling Arena.

By contrast, as much as I adore UK's new floor for including Kentucky Bend, it feels wrong that you could stand inside Pike County while shooting free throws.

The Iowa state outline will never be seen on the floor of Carver-Hawkeye Arena. No one living in Iowa City wants to remember that the rest of the state exists! ;)

It appears that Longwood and VMI are the only schools in Virginia that utilize the state background. Both at least include the Eastern Shore, so that's nice.

Georgia, with 300-plus counties, couldn't do that.
