Makes me think of some other unbreakable records ... like Emmitt Smith's 18,355 all-time rushing yards. The nature of the position now just isn't going to allow it to happen. The only active player in the top 20 is Derrick Henry, and he's 7,003 yards behind. He needs like four more 1,800 yard seasons to get there, which is pretty unlikely now that he's 31.
Nolan Ryan's 5,714 strikeouts is on that list. Verlander and Scherzer are the closest active players around 3,400 each. They've both got a little left in the tank, but not that much.
It's incredible that Nos. 2 and 3 on the list are Randy Johnson and Roger Clemens -- two guys who both had 20+ outstanding seasons and still needed another five peak years to catch Ryan.
