Music Thread (post a song)

Singles just aren't supposed to go straight in at No. 1 on the U.S. charts. That is the purview of the album charts and UK singles charts.

Songs are supposed to work their way up the charts every week with Casey Kasem spinning them every Saturday morning.

My Facebook feed has been showing various Billboard charts from selected weeks in the 70s and 80s. The other day I see "How Do You Do" at No. 8 in 1972. It kinda rang a bell, though I had no recollection of the performers. So I thought I'd look for it. Yep, it was that catchy song I barely remembered. Only now I CANNOT get it out of my head. Going on five days now.

Notice how they never cite Spotify streams, only iTunes sales.

I've bought a record and a CD more recently than a song on iTunes.

If you're a Deadhead, or even adjacent, this is a whale of a piece.

The Long Goodbye

These are not the hippies, but the party-crashing Alex P. Keatons that came in at the end and then went off to make millions and tuned back in once they became a Thing again. It's so crowded that I can barely lift my elbows. And I keep looking at the break-a-leg Coca-Cola slide in left and the banner reminding me to buy Levi's and fly Alaska. This is tolerable for everyday life, but I am here to avoid this grim hustle. The set list is impeccable and the songs meticulously played. I would rather be at the most mundane Dead & Company show than almost anywhere else, but tonight, there is the sense that the signposts are tilting in the wrong direction. A bummer. It's starting to feel like it's time.

Weirdly, this is kind of where I am at the moment with college football, the love of my life.

There are some wonderful pashages in that piece. Good writing. It helps that I know the culture and the history he's discussing, even if I was nowhere near California for any of it.

I'm posting two, because I had never heard the song that is heavily sampled in Beastie Boys' Johnny Ryall until it came up on my Spotify discover weekly playlist this week and it honestly blew my mind.
