If the Yankees decide not to bring Torre back, who would make the best replacement?

My list in order of preference:

1- Showalter- played huge roll in settting stage for Joe's success

2- Valentine

3- Girardi - would make it more likely that Rivera, Pettete and Posada would come back

Girardi's the right guy in my view. It will probably go to Mattingly, though.

The thing all the possible replacements, especially those who really hunger for this job, need to remember about replacing a beloved local institution is this:

You don't want to be the guy who replaces Torre.

You want to be the guy who replaces the guy who replaces Torre.

I think I'd rather be the guy who replaces the guy who replaces the guy who replaces Torre. It'd take at least three managers or so to fix that impending train wreck and get the team back into contention after the shit hits the fan.

And no, replacing a legend usually doesn't work unless you become a legend in your own right.

It's still Billy Martin's corpse leading the poll ;D

So, along those lines, I'll throw out another name for consideration.

Ditka.

Keptin, if you're going to suggest Dick-ka, I've got two names that should make Yankee fan blood curdle:

Bill Parcells. Mike Keenan.

Watch for the mass exodus of Yank veterans to begin in 5... 4... 3... 2...

My preference would be Showalter or Girardi

Another possibility from the Yankees (Bronx Zoo) glory days that nobody's mentioned yet:
Chris Chambliss - has served as a coach in the majors and I believe he's managed in the minors for a year or two. I think its a safe bet the Yankees will at least interview him to fill the requirement they interview a minority candidate.

A completely off-the-wall choice nobody's mentioned who has not shot, but he has experience managing in independent league baseball and he's a former Yankee who went to 3 World Series with the team, winning two of them.... Sparky Lyle

Mattingly's just perfect to be the fall guy . . . the amiable sap . . . before the Brothers Stein reach desperately for a cure-all, a couple of years down the road . . . lotsa luck.

Walter Alston and Tommy Lasorda. Joe Torre and Joe Girardi.
