College and the demographics cliff

I think if I had a child college age I would do everything in my power to guide them to a government job. Decent wage, amazing benefits, unmatched retirement and downsizing just ain't in the vernacular.

I have two kids in college, one studying music and one studying film. I'm now trying to figure out government jobs with those degrees.

We talked about this a bit in another thread, but there is about to be a sharp drop off in high school graduates thanks to the lower birth rates from the time of the recession at the close of the 2000s.

A lot more stories like this in the years to come.

The bill to close three of Mississippi's public universities isn't going anywhere, but eventually some of these schools will get the ax.

Ole Miss is getting ahead of this one. They accepted 98% of applicants for Fall 2023 admission. Not a joke. Not a typo. Gonna make sure they have enough bodies in the population. The place was never selective even though they'd like you to believe it has always been. I'm floored that they accepted 81% in 2013 and then let more and more folks in. And, yeah, applications have been increasing.

It's way better to study something that interests you and then figure out what to do with your life than to study something you don't like for an alleged career path. If you don't care for organic chemistry, you're probably not going to become a doctor.

Sonoma State ending sports and a lot of other stuff is also on the chopping block.

SSU announces deep cuts: Layoffs, program eliminations, end of athletics to address $23.9 million deficit

I've always thought there was a lot of redundancy with the Cal State system, probably with the UC systems as well. The schools should all have the "basics' English, Math, History, Science etc. to have the capability to give students a well-rounded education, but you don't need 10 plus campuses with journalism programs, art history or marine biology. Focus on what your strengths are, perhaps something your campus is well-situated geographically to excel in - forestry, ag, tech etc. The same can be said for extra-curriculars such as sports, and performing arts. Too bad about the Seawolves, nee Cossacks. Anyone know which NFL Hall of Famer played there?

Larry Allen?

Well, it wasn't until recently.
