2021-22 College Basketball Thread

I'm a marketer by trade these days and for the life of me I don't understand how an 18-year-old kid driving a Porsche can spur buyers to car lots.
In this case, maybe it doesn't have to have a recognizable business benefit.
The motivation is really to help Coach Cal get another five-star recruit who will mentally check out by late February.

My father-in-law is a marketing teacher and former high school basketball coach at a pretty high level and we had an hour-long discussion where I took your side. I have no idea why a car dealership would want to pay an individual player when they could just put an actor in the team's uniform with a partnership with the team.

College and high school athletes do not have name or face recognition, except for a few. My FIL kept insisting high school players will make money off this.

There are a whole lot of college players who are disappointed by the money that they're not making. High school players? Who cares besides a few thousand people in their home town, if that?

And the fans in the old home town don't care either, because after Five Star Freddy led Hometown High to the state semis as a freshman, he blew out of town halfway across the country to Nike All-Star Prep Academy and was never seen in his hometown again.

I asked our car ad salesperson why they think putting a blowup gorilla on the roof of the dealership helps sell cars. She said she didn't know, but they wouldn't do it if it didn't work.

And those things that look like giant Gumbys with arms flailing.

You know the first time I saw one of those? A fan blowing up a sleeve, making a sort of flappy balloon? When the Stones toured America in '72, they played on a stage that had inflatable (ahem) phalluses that grew out of the stage floor.
