John McCain ran up against a generational figure in Obama, nominated Sarah Palin and pulled that stupid campaign suspension stunt. And McCain was never a long shot anything.

Gaslighting is awesome.
It would've been a hard road for McCain no matter what, but having the world's financial system collapse in the stretch run of the campaign while his party held the White House was the kill shot. That was totally out of his control, as it would have been out of any candidate's control.

A healthy John McCain runs in 2016 with Kasich as his running mate against Hillary.
98.8% of this board still votes for Hillary. "Adult in the room" = "no chance to win at this point so therefore no threat, so we can say nice things about him."

I would have voted for McCain in '08 had he not added Palin to the ticket. That was a dealbreaker for me.

A healthy FDR emerges from his wheelchair having cast off the shackles of polio and runs against Trump, 98.8% of Yankee fans everywhere still vote for Trump.

An equally plausible scenario!

Palin was such a disaster, and given that McCain was never considered to be in the best of health, having Palin that close to the presidency was a fundamental deal-breaker, especially for my Boomer dad, who had already been moving from republican to independent. Add to that Obama's candidacy and, as mentioned, the economic downturn. I can still remember McCain's soundbite, "The fundamentals of the economy are strong," playing over and over again in ads.

Doesn't Yankee Fan have a capital F? And is there more than one of him?

Chris Sununu would be an excellent choice for R's. Most level headed R governor in America.
