That kind of night for the Illini.
Wut? That's insane. For a very long stretch of college basketball there were only 34 numbers eligible to ashign (expanding to 36 once 1 and 2 became legal). For a program that doesn't have a lot of postseason success, I was stunned to see that's the 36th number to be honored.

Burns, I don't know if you're connected to Mizzou, but there was an alum push to get English hired before Gates got the job. Lots of pining for the guy who was beloved — truly — as a player. I think Kim will become a very good coach in time, but Gates is the real deal for Mizzou; I'm a fan.
It does expand to 72 once you include women's basketball, but I've never known Illinois to be any kind of powerhouse in that sport. Gymnastics and wrestling don't even have numbers. I suppose volleyball makes up a healthy chunk.Yeah, that has to be 36 numbers across all sports.
"I wanted to make sure they weren't happy we're going to be OK. No. If we'd won that game, we're in the tournament. … SO IT'S NOT OK TO SAY WE'LL BE ALL RIGHT! Now, we're going to have to go get somebody else.
"But I didn't wanna put that on them, because I've got some guys that are a little bit fragile … but when you're losing some games, or you're not playing well, that happens."
